Living Streets in Scotland gets a boost

Four new jobs mean major expansion for Living Streets Scotland

Living Streets Scotland is set for a major expansion, thanks to new funding from the Scottish Government. The move will hugely increase momentum in its work to bring our streets to life, with more walking in people-friendly public spaces.

The UK wide charity Living Streets has been operating in Scotland for the last three years - working with communities, local authorities, government and professionals to campaign for change and practically improve the physical environment for people on foot.

In this new and exciting phase, we are recruiting four posts to develop the links between increased walking levels and health, and to truly engage with communities and find out how best to improve their streets. The new team will expand our impact across Scotland, helping to influence policy and make practical changes to improve peoples health and activity levels.

Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streets, said: "Increased walking is the nearest thing to perfect exercise, and is something that almost everyone can do – with huge health benefits. "But in order to increase walking levels, we need streets that are safe and attractive to walk in, and we need to make sure that everyone from MSPs to the parent on the school run knows the benefits to their health. This new funding from the Scottish Government will allow us to help communities improve their neighbourhoods, and will spread understanding of how everyday walking can bring positive benefits to the health of Scotland."

The new posts are: · Living Streets Scotland Manager · Engaging Communities Officer · Campaigns Assistant · Walkability and Health Training Officer (to be recruited from Autumn 2008)

Any suggestions for points that should be included would be very welcome - by 3rd March please if posssible. Email comments to John Russell. Street Campaigning In Your Area?

Get active in your community and help improve your local streets

We are proud to be a membership organisation - it's our supporters, activists and local groups that make us such a good organisation, and accomplish so much to make our streets better for people on foot.

We are looking for people who are prepared to be contacted on issues in their local area, and who may be willing to have their details passed on to like-minded individuals who want to get more active. In this way, we hope to strengthen our network of people who care about their communities, and want to help improve our streets.

If you would like to be a community contact for your area, then email Lucy Abell on the address below.
